Commuters

Last updated at 3/10/2026

The Commuter dataset describes the spatial mobility of employees subject to social insurance contributions and shows the interconnections between residential and workplace locations. It includes the percentage of outbound commuters among employees subject to social insurance contributions at their place of residence, as well as the percentage of inbound commuters at their workplace. Additionally, it provides the percentages of employees with a commute of at least 50, 150, and 300 kilometers from their place of residence. Furthermore, the commuter balance per 100 employees at the workplace offers a metric for the net inflow or outflow of employees. The percentages refer to the number of employees subject to social insurance contributions at the respective residential or workplace location. The data is available at the level of municipalities and postal codes, enabling reliable analyses of commuter flows, the reach of regional labor markets, and the extent of long-distance commuting. This supports well-founded assessments in labor market, transportation, and location planning.
