Last updated at 3/10/2026

The dataset "Rahmendaten Zentraler Orte" provides a comprehensive basis for analyzing the settlement structural and central-place characteristics of municipalities and postal code areas in Germany. It includes the total number of inhabitants, the population development over the last five years in percent, the cadastral area in square kilometers, the population density as inhabitants per square kilometer, and the spatial type according to location as per BBSR. Additional information on land consumption is provided by the proportion of settlement and traffic area to the total area and the related density as inhabitants per square kilometer of settlement and traffic area. For settlement structural classification, the city or municipality type of the BBSR and the central-place status are available in both detailed and summarized forms. The data are available at the granularities of municipality and postal code and are suitable for regional comparisons, trend analyses, location assessments, and planning-relevant evaluations in administration, research, and business.
