Settlement Structure

Last updated at 3/10/2026

The Settlement Structure dataset provides a solid foundation for analyzing the spatial distribution of population and jobs. It contains information on the proportion of the population living in medium-sized centers and potential medium-sized centers, as well as the proportion in major centers and potential major centers. Additionally, it provides key figures on population density and the combined density of residents and employees per km2. The dataset also records the proportion of residents living in municipalities with a population density of less than 150 inhabitants per km2. These features enable a differentiated assessment of centrality structures, density levels, and settlement patterns in different areas. The data is available at the municipal level and at the level of postal code areas, allowing for both municipal comparisons and small-scale analyses. Typical application fields include spatial planning, location and infrastructure planning, housing and regional development, as well as the assessment of accessibility and supply in medium-sized and major centers. By combining the indicators, urban and rural areas can be delineated, trends in settlement development can be identified, and action needs can be derived based on evidence.
