Separately collected recyclables include mixed packaging, glass, paper, cardboard, cartons, metals, wood, plastic, and textiles. **Full name:** Surplus of nitrogen balance of agricultural land in kg N/ha UL **Algorithm:** (excess nitrogen balance in t <time> + excess nitrogen balance in t <time-1> + excess nitrogen balance in t <time-2>) / 3 / agricultural land area in ha <time> x 1000 **Note:** The nitrogen surplus is determined through model calculations by the Institute for Resource Management at the University of Gießen. The calculation includes fertilizer use, atmospheric deposition, removal through yields, etc. In the overall balance, agriculture is considered as a unit (both individual farms and agriculture as an economic sector), which receives inputs in the form of mineral fertilizers, externally produced feed, and other products, and markets plant and animal products as output (nutrition, industrial processing, export). The surplus of a balance unit corresponds to the difference between N-input and N-removal and characterizes the potential nitrogen losses from this unit. Due to annual fluctuations, the moving 3-year average is used. The annual fluctuations are based on varying yields, but also on changes in stocks of N-mineral fertilizers, which cause stronger fluctuations in the N-surplus in individual years only arithmetically, but balance out over several years on average. Only a small percentage of the annual water supply, i.e., the amount of freshwater available from the natural water cycle, is withdrawn and returned to the cycle after use. Nevertheless, water remains a valuable resource that should continue to be used carefully in Germany. In particular, the extraction of deep water, which takes place in numerous regions, can lead to a long-term reduction in groundwater reserves and thus affect the principle of intergenerational justice. The statistics are provided on a 3-year cycle. The water supply statistics refer to households and small businesses, which affects the values due to household and business structure.

Total waste includes construction and demolition, commercial, mining, and municipal waste. The indicator is therefore heavily influenced by the business structure in this territorial unit. It also includes waste generated elsewhere but disposed of or treated in the territorial unit. All waste introduced into the facility and waste leaving the facility are included. Secondary waste, i.e., waste treated multiple times, is recorded in each treatment facility it passes through. Hazardous waste is included. The waste disposal survey is conducted with operators of facilities requiring approval, who dispose of their own or third-party waste (or parts thereof), meaning treat, recover, or eliminate. Waste quantities are reported by the statistics in t. The data is available at the district and postal code levels and is suitable for regional comparisons, monitoring, and planning in administration, waste management, water management, and agriculture. By combining per capita indicators and percentage values, the dataset enables reliable statements on waste generation, composition of household waste, recycling potentials, organic waste shares, water demand of private households and small businesses, as well as the assessment of nutrient surpluses in agriculture.
